Using specific yoga exercises to get solid abs

Is it possible to get the famous so-called 6 pack abs from yoga? Even if the key objectives of yoga are not aesthetics, yoga can be very effective for firming your stomach muscles and trimming unwanted fat.

Most people today, male or female, appreciate firm abs and today I want to show you three very effective yoga asanas for firming and toning your abdominal muscles and lower back.

The three asanas that we are looking at today, as mentioned work your entire mid-section, lower back, buttocks, the intercostals region as well as internal organs and aside from working your stomach muscles the poses provide many health benefits. Please remember that yoga is completely different from regular gym routines; with yoga we are not interested in endless repetitions of the same exercise and sweating under a heavy, relentless workload. No, we are looking for perfect execution of the pose and holding the pose for a determined amount of time. For reaching the objectives of this article, I would like to suggest that you do each exercise from the list 5 times and consider this as one set, to use the familiar gym terminology, if you have trouble performing the reverse boat posture you can try holding your thighs and do the pose just two or three times only, you may also use a yoga strap.

Please do not sacrifice form just to complete the movement. With practice you can build up your routine – not with individual reps but by holding the pose longer.

Yoga Workouts for Toned Firm Abs

The three basic poses we focus on are the following:

  • Marjariasana – The Cat Pose
  • Supta Udarakarshanasana – The Lying Abdominal Stretch Pose
  • Reverse Naukasana – The Boat Pose

For complete instruction on how to perform the exercises in order to obtain the desired results, please visit our website (follow the link below) where you will find the entire version of this article as well as illustrative photographs which will greatly help you go through the poses using a correct style.

The Benefits of your Yoga for Abs workout

You will probably not get the famous 6-pack abs mid-section from yoga, however you will certainly firm and strengthen your entire abdominal region as well as your lower back. If you add a low-impact cardiovascular exercise to the mentioned yoga routine, such as walking or swimming, you will melt unwanted body fat covering your abdominal region and sides even more rapidly. Not only will you feel tighter and stronger you will also appreciate the following benefits:

Benefits of the Cat Pose

increases mobility of vertebrae and releases tension in the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine strengthens and tones the arms and abdominal muscles stretches back muscles and abdominal muscles as well as the neck increases circulation of spinal fluid and massages digestive organs teaches correct pelvic movements for forward bends and back bends. It also gives your digestive organs a gentle massage.

Benefits of the Lying Abdominal Twist Pose

The spinal nerves will become toned and you will feel emotionally strengthened. Physically your abdominals will become firmer and the metabolism is tweaked, due to the massaging pressure on abdomen, aiding weight loss and trimming of the waist and hips. This pose also will aid in helping in aligning posture. It helps regularize bowel movements and prepares the body for the day ahead.

Benefits of the Reverse Boat Pose

The benefits of doing this exercise are many. As your abdominal section is under pressure, your liver and pancreas can function better. This can lead to increased secretion of bile from the liver and insulin from the pancreas, thus improving your digestion. It could also help to regulate your blood sugar levels. In addition, the muscles of your legs, especially the calf and thigh muscles, and the muscles around your shoulders and neck get toned. Above all your tummy fat is reduced. Although you cannot build six pack abs with this exercise itself, doing it regularly can prepare you for heavier exercises that can make it possible for you to achieve six packs.

There, quite a lot to read and assimilate, but I hope the instructions together with my going through the asanas with you in the photos help you fully understand the yoga poses for toning the abs. Good luck and stick with it – the benefits are far too many to give up!

Nico Webb jointly runs yoga and meditation classes with his wife Durga, between them they have over 20 years experience and enjoy passing on their knowledge to others. Please click over to Yoga for toning your abdominals for the complete 3 part article.

The benefits of doing Yoga are three-fold. Not only do you get a leaner, more toned figure, and increased flexibility, but yoga also helps with the heart and the mind. Some may not realize it but it’s a common myth that’s true, mind and body go hand in hand. For those of you who want to get back on your Patio Dining Set, and live a more healthy, more relaxed life, yoga is just the thing for you. This is one of the best ways to get rid of all that unwanted stress in your body.

The practice of yoga can be carried out through hundreds of different exercises. One common technique is called Anuloma Viloma. This is when a person breathes through one nostril, calming the mind and the nervous system. Alternating between both nostrils ultimately helps one side of the brain make connections with the other, thus allowing neurons to freely move about. Though exercises such as this, one can begin to think more freely. There is a positive balance between the creative and logical side of one’s brain. This allows us to confront our anxiety head on and think about more peaceful things. It’s a very simple trick to diverting our stress.

By means of stabilizing one’s nervous system, yoga positively acts as stress management. By doing these types of exercises, we allow our bodys to reach a more reasonable sense of control. Overall, this can definitely give someone a better optimism and appreciation for the things around them. A heightened awareness level reduces any kind of anger or instability and usually one shows signs of being more sociable. Basically, doing yoga can help someone reach a more positive outlook on life.

As you can see, yoga not only gives us better flexibility, increased stamina, toned muscles, and a stable heart rate, but the practice of yoga can also transform us mentally.

The ancient Vedic Hindu philosophy, Yoga has been derived from the Sanskrit word ‘yuj’ which means ‘to reunite’. Yoga is the philosophy of reuniting one’s ownself with the Supreme divine self. This reunion of the atma with the paramatma is not a very easy process rather it is quite a tough task to establish this bond. But from thousands of years ago, this ancient art is proving its potentiality to make a balance between human mind, body and soul – thus help an individual to create the bond with the Omnipotent power. Yoga and its various forms like Hatha yoga, Kundalini yoga, Ashtanga yoga, Kriya yoga and many more have the magical power to transform a human being into a higher level of spiritualism. And if it is practiced with yoga music probably one can expect the best result.

Music has the magical power of soothing and relaxing the mind or brain with its melodious tunes. Some kind of devotional music like meditation music or yoga music increases the level of concentration and thus help people to awaken the self-consciousness. Some accessories even help to develop a better level of concentration. There are few yoga accessories without which your yoga practice will remain incomplete such as yoga mat, yoga clothings etc. Like these items, yoga jeweleries and malas are also inevitable for practicing yoga. Jeweleries like sacred mantra engraved karas, lotus ring help to uplift the spiritual senses within and thus make it easy to establish that divine bond. The yoga jewelery sets of earrings and pendants are very much helpful in doing meditation. And if it is paired with meditation music then one can expect perhaps the best result.

Malas are considered as the most important accessories in meditation. We cannot imagine meditating without a sacred 108 Rudraksha mala. The sacred string of 108 beads helps one to focus and concentrate in the meditation practice. The power beads are the most significant spiritual tool to count the prayers or mantras. Equipment you will need in Yoga

January 8, 2010 by admin

Now, there are more and more people start to practice yoga. But before practice, you need to prepare for some equipments.

Basic Equipment

Clothing: Comfortable, breathable clothes are recommended for yoga. You probably want to wear a shirt that is a little bit form-fitting, since in many yoga poses, your head comes below your hips and your shirt can slide down. Any exercise pants or shorts will do, although it’s best not to have super slick lycra-type pants since this may cause you to slip in some poses.

Mats: In gyms and yoga studios, it’s commonplace to use a yoga mat, also called a sticky mat. The mat helps define your personal space, but more importantly, it creates traction for your hands and feet so you don’t slip, especially as you get a little sweaty. The mat also provides a bit of cushioning on a hard floor. Most studios have mats for rent, usually for a dollar or two per class. The disadvantage to these mats is that lots of people use them and you can’t be sure how often they are being washed. Yoga mats can be purchased for as little as $20, and many studios will allow you to store your mat with them if you become a regular.

Shoes: Yoga is most often done barefoot, which is great news for those of us tired of packing a bulky pair of athletic shoes for after work trips to the gym. Yoga studios will often request that you leave your shoes near the entrance.

Just like golf clubs are necessary for golfers. You also need some accessories or optional equipments. The following yoga props come out of the Iyengar tradition.

Blankets: Yoga studios often have stacks of blankets available for students to use during class. Grab yourself one or two blankets at the beginning of class. The folded blankets are props to sit and lie on during class. For instance, sit cross-legged and put a blanket under your sit bones to elevate the hips above the knees. They come in handy for all sorts of things during class, and if it’s chilly you can use them to cover yourself during final relaxation at the end of class.

Straps: Straps are particularly useful for bound poses if your hands do not reach each other, and for poses where you need to hold onto your feet but cannot reach them.

Blocks: Like blankets, blocks are props to make yourself more comfortable and improve your alignment. Blocks are great for standing poses in which your hands don’t reach the floor.

Note: There are also different brands of these products. Golf clubs has Taylormade, callaway etc anyhow. So shopping around.

Yama includes Ahimsa, Satya, Asteya, Brahmacharya, Aparigraha. Ahimsa is the main yama. Ahimsa is to refrain from injury, refrain from causing pain to any creature in thought, word or deed at all times. In Mahabharata it is stated “How can you expect compassion from a meat-eater”. As compassion is the foundation of Nirvana, please take a moment to think about it. The entire natural, green, eco-friendly movements attracting trillions of dollars of investment is a good sign to observe that mankind is starting to understand Ahimsa in a larger scale.

Satya is being truthful in word and thought all the time. Asteya mans avoidance of stealing, not coveting, not hoarding, not obstructing other people’s desires in life. Brahmacharya means continence, celibate when single and faithful when married. In yoga, it is disciplining the use of sexual energy. In Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras it is one of the 5 Yamas and it causes unbounded energy or vitality. Aparigraha is non-possessiveness.

Niyama includes Shaucha (purity), Santosha (contentment), Tapas (austerity), Svadhyaya (self-study and study of spiritual scriptures) and Ishvarapranidhana (self-surrender to divinity).

Asana means posture and pranayama means breath control.

These requirements mentioned above (yama, niyama, asana and pranayama) are the external requiremenst we need to achieve in order to attain self-realization and hence nirvana and ultimate happiness. The inner requirements are Pratyahara (sense control), Dharana (concentration), Dhyana (meditation), Samadhi (contemplation) follow the external requirements and i will try to share detailed explaination of these in my next article.

I wish you all a perfect day and life full of endless happiness :)
