Everett Sizemore asked:

It does not matter whether you are a yoga newbie or have been doing yoga so long you’ve memorized your instructor’s routine, asana-by-asana – sooner or later you’ll be in the market for a new yoga mat. I used to think every yoga mat was created equally until I bought a jute yoga mat and discovered that it didn’t smell like chemicals. Of course, it fell apart within two months…

That’s when I decided to write an article about the different types of yoga mats out there, how to choose one that’s best for you, and how to choose one that isn’t terrible for the environment either.

The Standard Cheap Yoga Mat

Many people get a cheapo mat the first time. This is fine, especially if you’re not sure whether you are going to be a yoga fanatic yet. You can usually find these from between $5 and $10 at any mega-store like Target or Kmart.

There are several problems with a standard yoga mat. First, they are often very thin and do not provide much cushioning. Most importantly, however, they stink like chemicals and are made using a very environmentally hazardous process. Furthermore, the chemicals used may be bad for your health. They are made using Phthalates, which turn hard plastics into soft plastics. Studies on rodents involving large amounts of phthalates have shown damage to the liver, the kidneys, the lungs and the developing testes.

I know a lot of people who use standard yoga mats and they’re not dead or dying (that I know of). Just don’t leave them in the trunk of your car because they tend to release a chemical smell when they get hot.

Jute and Cork Yoga Mats

Jute and cork yoga mats are an affordable, eco-friendly alternative to the standard yoga mat, but they have some drawbacks of their own. Cork and jute mats both come from very porous plants. As the material absorbs your sweat during yoga classes, it becomes A: a bit stinky and B: a little weak. While it is not going to fall apart in your hands like wet paper, don’t expect one of these to last a long time if you do yoga more than once a month.

Rubber Yoga Mats

Rubber yoga mats are my favorite. They are durable, affordable and – best of all – they are made from rubber, which is a fairly sustainable material that comes from the rubber tree. Just make sure that you are buying a “natural” rubber mat because the material can be produced synthetically as well – although synthetic rubber isn’t nearly as bad for the environment and your health as phthalates.

Natural rubber yoga mats should be avoided if you are allergic to latex. Instead, try one of the phthalate-free, latex free mats from this page http://www.gaiam.com/retail/product/95-1041_OLIV . They are a little more expensive, but if you are allergic to latex, don’t want to work out on chemicals, and need something that isn’t going to fall apart on you – this type of mat is definitely the way to go.

Using a Pilates Mat for Yoga

Pilates mats are much thicker than yoga mats. This is required because you are spending more time on the floor, often with pressure points like hips, knees, shoulders and elbows supporting some or all of your weight. It is also very important for cushioning to keep your spine from getting injured when doing rolls while lying on your back. Can you use a pilates mat for yoga? Sure, but they are more expensive, bulkier, and you will need to make sure they have a non-slip surface. Yoga mats do tend to be “stickier” which is needed when doing most asanas. But if you do yoga and pilates, try buying just the pilates mat and see if you like it for yoga as well. I do not, however, advise using a yoga mat for pilates, as it can cause injury.

Places to find yoga mats online:

http://www.gaiam.com/yoga/ – Gaiam Yoga Products are well known for their quality and for including many eco-conscious options like jute and rubber. The can be a little pricey, but if you look for items on sale there are deals to be found.

http://www.ecomall.com/biz/fitness.htm – Eco Mall’s yoga and fitness section has a huge list of online resources, most of which have a “green” outlook on business.

http://www.firstpagefitness.com/directory/ – First Page Fitness has a directory of businesses in the fitness industry, many of which sell yoga mats online.

http://www.target.com – Target has a lot of inexpensive yoga products, including a few different types of standard yoga and pilates mats. If your goal is to just buy something cheap to get started with, I’d advise skipping all of the expensive shops and just going to Target.

Using the Class Yoga Mats

I strongly discourage using the communal yoga mats found in most fitness centers and studios. These are breeding grounds for germs and bacteria. You can buy yoga mat wipes if you must use a communal mat. Most of these wipes are just expensively packaged alcohol pads, so you can save a lot of money by getting a box of wipes from Walgreens.

Going Without a Yoga Mat

People have been practicing yoga for thousands of years without modern mats. The reason why most people these days use a yoga mat is because they wear socks, which cause their feet to slip during poses. Even if they do their yoga routine without socks (which can be very unhygienic in most fitness centers and yoga studios) today’s yoga routine typically takes place on a tile or hard-wood floor, which becomes slippery as the feet sweat. Thus, a sticky yoga mat provides the necessary foundation on which to perform the asanas. However, if you regularly practice yoga in an environment that does not have a slippery surface – such as outdoors or on carpet – there really is no need for a yoga mat at all. I have also found that a pair of yoga socks like these – http://www.gaiam.com/retail/product/95-9196_MSTR – works just as well as a mat without all of the hassle and a fraction of the cost.

Whether you go with a standard mat, a Pilates mat, socks, or one of the many “green” options available these days, there is a yoga mat made just for you! I hope the above information helps you decide.

Deborah Rummelhart asked:

Yoga provides great stress relief and other health benefits. The Mayo Clinic recommends yoga for stress management and relaxation, and medical journal articles have proven yoga’s effectiveness in treating serious medical conditions such as arthritis, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, depression and multiple sclerosis.

How do you make sure that you get the great stress relief and other benefits of yoga? Easy! Ask any yoga teacher the questions listed below. If the teacher’s answers closely match the ideal answers, you have found a great teacher.

QUESTION 1: DO YOU PRACTICE YOGA NOW?

IDEAL ANSWER 1: YES, I PRACTICE YOGA EVERY DAY.

If you wanted to learn to ride a bicycle, would you take lessons from someone who wrote a book about bicycles but had never actually ridden a bike? Only if you wanted to find the quickest way to fall off the bicycle! No amount of reading or theoretical knowledge will enable you to understand how to ride a bicycle. Sooner or later you have to get on the bike. The same is true of yoga. Only someone who is currently practicing yoga can safely and effectively teach you how to do yoga.

QUESTION 2: ARE YOU CURRENTLY TAKING LESSONS WITH A YOGA TEACHER?

IDEAL ANSWER: YES, I STUDY WITH A QUALIFIED TEACHER IN A RECOGNIZED YOGA TEACHING STYLE.

Even your yoga teacher needs a yoga teacher. Why? Yoga is a process, and there is always more to learn. Everyone learns more about yoga by getting feedback from a great teacher. You want your yoga teacher to be aware of the latest discoveries on how to teach yoga. The best way for your teacher to do this is to take lessons with another yoga teacher.

QUESTION 3: WHAT TYPE OF YOGA DO YOU TEACH, AND HOW DID THAT STYLE OF TEACHING YOGA DEVELOP?

IDEAL ANSWER: I TEACH “Y” STYLE OF YOGA WHICH HAS EXISTED FOR AT LEAST 10 YEARS.

If a yoga teaching style has existed for at least 10 years, the teachers in that system know the best ways to teach and the pitfalls to be avoided. In addition, if a situation comes up that your teacher does not know how to handle, your teacher will be able to ask a more experienced teacher in that teaching style for advice.

QUESTION 4: WHAT TYPE OF YOGA TEACHER TRAINING HAVE YOU HAD?

IDEAL ANSWER: I HAVE COMPLETED (OR AM CURRENTLY ENROLLED IN) A 500 HOUR TEACHER TRAINING PROGRAM WHICH INCLUDES CLASSES, EXAMS, AND APPRENTICE TEACHING.

Suppose a pipe burst in your house and sent a fountain of water gushing through your kitchen. Uh-oh, you need a plumber! There are two plumbers in your neighborhood: Plumber Smith and Plumber Jones. Plumber Smith used to be an electrician but took a one weekend plumber certification course and is now a plumber. Plumber Jones enrolled in a year long plumbing certification course at a special plumber training school, passed the plumbing certification exam, and apprenticed for one year under a master plumber. Which plumber would you choose?

Since yoga can have an enormous impact on your health, shouldn’t you take as much care in choosing a yoga teacher as you would in choosing a plumber? Your yoga teacher should be enrolled in or have completed a yoga teacher training course that lasts at least one year, and includes classes on how to do yoga, classes on how to teach yoga, apprentice teaching under a certified and experienced teacher, and certification exams.

One of the most comprehensive yoga teacher training programs in existence is the Iyengar Yoga Teacher Certification Program. If you are new to yoga, or suffer from a disease or injury, I strongly recommend that you seek out a certified Iyengar Yoga teacher.

QUESTION 5: DOES YOUR YOGA TEACHER HAVE A KIND AND EMPATHETIC HEART?

IDEAL ANSWER: YES.

Only you can determine if the answer to this question is yes.

A kind yoga teacher really cares about his or her students.

This doesn’t necessarily mean that a teacher is quiet or a pushover. A teacher may speak loudly because your attention has wandered off and he or she is trying to get your attention back. A kind yoga teacher will carefully watch what you are doing, and guide you into doing yoga more correctly. Find a great yoga teacher, follow his or her instructions, and the health and stress relief benefits of yoga will be yours!

Aliesa George asked:

The Pilates Method teaches a common-sense approach to efficient movement habits for whole-body health. Every Pilates exercise combines strength and flexibility with breathing and total body awareness. Learning to pay attention to what your body is doing and how it moves is a must for getting the most from your Pilates training program.

Developed as a system or movement regime, Pilates training provides a variety of choices both in exercises and specialized Pilates equipment to help reinforce good movement habits for an improved quality of life. With over five hundred exercises in the Pilates system, there are lots of exercises to choose from to keep you focused, motivated, and progressing towards your wellness goals.

Safe, Efficient, Injury-free Movement

Done well, the Pilates Method exercises help teach you how your body is put together and how to find and use all the right parts for safe, efficient, injury-free movement. Everything you learn about how to move your body during a Pilates training program can be practiced during other sport and fitness activities, and with time… these important new habits, acquired during Pilates workouts, will transfer into fitness for an improved quality of daily life.

Joseph Pilates believed that, “Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness.”

A sound mind in a strong body gives us the tools necessary to live life to the fullest. If you’re looking for a fitness program that is fun, challenging, develops balance and control, provides total body conditioning, improves posture and breathing, helps reduce stress, and has a strong focus on a combination of core strength and flexibility — incorporate Pilates exercises and principles into your weekly workout routine.

Pilates really is for every Body!

Regardless of age or fitness level there is always an appropriate place to start when developing your Pilates workout program.

If you’re healthy, Pilates Matwork can be a great way to get your Pilates workout program started. There are over 50 different Pilates Matwork exercises. A basic Mat workout usually includes about fifteen to twenty exercises and, once you know what you’re doing, can be completed in as little as ten to fifteen minutes! This can be a quick stand-alone workout, or can be a great complement to an aerobic training program. An experienced Pilates student can complete an advanced Pilates Mat workout in thirty minutes to an hour.

You can find numerous books, Pilates Mat videos, DVD’s and Pilates MP3 workouts on the market that can be good resources to help remember the exercises, but many people are unaware that Matwork is only half of the Pilates system. For ideal results, your Pilates program should incorporate both Matwork and Pilates Equipment exercises into your workout program. And nothing compares to the benefits you can receive through the hands-on assistance of a qualified Pilates teacher.

We all have dominant and weaker muscles, and don’t always notice when we’re cheating. Regardless of your athletic background, when you are learning the Pilates exercises, the eagle-eye of a good instructor can assist you in really getting the most from your Pilates training program. Once you know what you’re doing, you should be self-sufficient and able to workout on your own with occasional sessions with a Pilates instructor to tweak your technique and progress your workout program.

Get Great Benefits from Your Pilates Workouts

If you want to make the most of your Pilates training experience, (or have any injuries or have had recent surgery,) private one-on-one Pilates training using the Pilates Reformer and other specialized Pilates equipment — Pilates Cadillac / Trapeze Table, the Ladder Barrel, Spine Corrector, Pedi-pole, and Pilates Chairs, may be the very best option to develop a safe and effective exercise program. The Pilates equipment provides both more support, and more resistance, to assist you in learning how to strengthen and stretch the right muscles. Plus with hundreds of exercises to choose from, a personalized program can be developed to take your special needs and goals into consideration for a fun, rewarding workout experience that will help you get the results you’re looking for from your Pilates wellness program.

When in doubt, it’s always a good idea to start with a few one-on-one Pilates training sessions and let your Pilates teacher help guide you into a workout plan that’s best for you. Whether it’s on the Pilates equipment, Matwork, or both… a well-planned, whole-body Pilates workout should be completed in less than hour. Rather than being exhausted, you should feel more invigorated when you are finished. The goal: improved mind, body, and spirit, increased circulation and blood flow, reduced stress, improved energy and enhanced vitality to enjoy life!

Most Pilates students begin to see improvements after their first few sessions. For some changes are dramatic and happen very quickly. Others begin to notice subtle differences in how they breathe, sit, stand, and move. One of Joseph Pilates famous quotes is, “You’ll feel better after 10 sessions, look better after 20, and have a completely new body after 30 sessions.”

Happiness and Health Go Hand in Hand.

Looking for a Pilates Teacher? Here are Five Tips to finding a Pilates Teacher: www.CenterworksPilates.com/blog/find-a-pilates-teacher

A Pilates exercise program can be one of the best ways to keep your whole body healthy, and Pilates workouts are for every Body! If you haven’t experienced the benefits of Pilates do yourself a favor and find a qualified teacher, Pilates studio, or health club that offers Pilates training programs for both the Matwork exercises and Pilates equipment, and check it out. Learn what the Pilates Method can do for you! You’ll love the results.

This Pilates apparatus uses that of variable-length and gauge springs to lengthen and strengthen a person’s muscles all at the same time and to improve that of joint flexibility and range of motion.

2) The aero Pilates treadmill is one of the best and perhaps the most versatile type of treadmill which will enable you to carry out some 50 plus Pilates exercises effortlessly.

There are many reasons that make the aero Pilates machine exceptional:

(i) it has padded jump-board which is easy on the joints when practicing the exercises,

(ii) the machine is created to stay about 10 inches off the floor which helps in the performances of advanced Pilate exercises,

(iii) it offers a total and highly efficient cardio-vascular workout,

(iv) it has four levels of elastic chords for four different levels of workout, and

(v) it supports 50 Pilates exercises which can tone, strengthen and shape every muscle in the body.

The aero Pilates also has an extremely strong stainless steel body, with adjustable headset. The machine has also extra shoulder pads installed.

3) The Pilates studio reformer is the first choice of professionals since 1976. It provides the smoothest and quietest ride of other similar product on the market. The Pilates reformer should be comfortable and have good craftsmanship with every edge being sculpted and smooth. In addition, it is also possible to design one’s own reformer by choosing from the many innovative footbar and springbar systems that are easily adjustable and which also very much reduces the interruptions to a workout.

4) There is other Pilates equipment such as the Pilates trapeze tables, half trapezes and towers which provide the best in spring-assisted, integrated Pilates workouts. There are many different exercises that can be performed on these Pilates trapeze tables and there is even the Five-in-one exercise system called the Allegro Tower and Reformer which includes two mat stations, a Half Trapeze and the integrated Tower and moving carriage system.

The Allegro Tower of Power features consist of the expandable 5-in-one exercise system that enables the exerciser to start with the Allegro Reformer and may also include the Tower, if so required. It also retrofits any Allegro and the simple mat conversion enables the exerciser to move the carriage to the head of the machine and also drop in the mat.

5) The Pilates chair is another Pilates equipment which is the most ideal for space-saving Pilates. It also has with wheels that enable easy movement. These Pilates chair has been intended to allow stretching and strengthening of the muscle groups that cannot be easily accessed by conventional training and equipment. The Pilates chair has evolved from the Wunda Chair system with the padded split step giving extra dimension of rotational and reciprocal movement of the extremities. It is also most suited for use at the end of a Trapeze table.

Where Do You Go To Own A Pilates Equipment

If you are wondering as to where you can go to find a Pilates equipment, you should be able to find all the different machines at your local fitness store or gym, and if you know a place that caters exclusively to the matter of Pilates, then you should check there first.

Alternatively you could go to a fitness center and ask one of the fitness professionals there where you can go to purchase the Pilates equipment. In addition, you should not have to pay an insanely high price for one of these machines, as you can also find them at discounted prices from companies that are selling them wholesale.

However, you should also be aware that it can be dangerous to buy a device that is used. It is more advisable to spend a bit of extra money to get a brand new one as opposed to risking your health by purchasing a used one.

The first choice before beginning any research is of course to look it up on the internet. Find a reliable website for your information and you should be prepared to ask any questions before owning a Pilates equipment.

Cindy Heller asked:

History of Hatha Yoga: The history of hatha yoga goes back in the fifteenth century India when Yogi Swatmarama, a sage during those times, introduced it as a form of “a stairway to the heights” of Raja Yoga which is the preparatory stage of physical purification that makes the body fit for the practice of higher form of meditation. Hatha yoga is also known to be called as “hatha vidya” and the word “hatha” is a combination of the words, “ha” which means sun “tha” that means moon and they are said to refer to the prinicipal “nadis” or the energy channels of the body and must be fully operational to attain the state of “dhyana” or a certain aspect of meditation.

Some people may link that the origins of hatha yoga which dates back in the tenth or eleventh century with Goraknath, a yogin during those times. However, the oldest surviving text about hatha yoga is the Hatha Yoga Pradipika by yogin, Yogi Swatmarama. The text is said to be taken from old Sanskrit writings and personal yogin experiences of the yogin himself. The text relates about shatkarma, asana, pranayama, chakras, kundalini, bandhas, kriyas, shakti, nadis, and mudras among others.

Concept of Hatha yoga: The total concept of the traditional hatha yoga is a holistic yogic path comprising of moral disciplines, physical exercises, breath control, and meditation. The hatha yoga that is widely practiced and popular in the western countries mainly composed of the “asanas” or postures and other exercises.

Hatha yoga is only one of the two concepts of yoga that concentrates on the physical culture and the other yoga is the Raja yoga but both of these are referred to as Ashtanga yoga. The main difference is that the Raja yoga concentrates more on the “asanas” or postures to get the body ready for a prolonged meditation that concentrates mainly on the meditative “asana” poses. The hatha yoga on the other hand concentrates on balancing the mind and body through physical exercises, controlled breathing, and calming the mind through meditation and sheer relaxation.

Different positions or postures are recommended by practitioners to help lessen or avoid health problems ranging from constipation through cancer. It was said that it helps to reduce stress, pressure, and other mental worries that people today are frequently exposed to.

History of Karma Yoga

Karma yoga also known as Buddhi Yoga or the “discipline of action” is centered on the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita, a sacred Sanskrit scripture of Hinduism. One of the four pillars of yoga, Karma yoga concentrates on the adherence to duty (dharma) while remaining detached from the reward. It states that one can attain Moksha (salvation) or love of God (bhakti) by performing their duties in a selfless manner for the pleasure of the Supreme. Karma Yoga is an inherent part of many derivative types of yoga, such as Natya Yoga.

Concept Of Karma Yoga

The word Karma is mentioned from the Sanskrit Kri, meaning ‘to do’, in its most basic sense karma simply means action, and yoga translates to union. Therefore, Karma yoga literally translates to the path of union through action. It is described as a way of acting, thinking and willing by which one acts in accordance with one’s duty (dharma) with no consideration of personal selfish desires, likes or dislikes, i.e. acting without being emotionally involved to the fruits of one’s deeds.

In the case of Arjuna in the Gita, this translated to his fighting in the oncoming war to uphold the righteous cause in accordance with his duty as a warrior; even if out of compassion, he did not want to battle with his relatives and teachers on the other side.

Krishna then goes on to tell how Arjuna should surrender the fruits of his actions (good or bad) to himself (as the Supreme Person or avatara) :

Krishna describes that allocated work done without expectations, motives, or anticipation of its outcome purifies one’s mind and slowly makes an individual fit to see the value of reason. He states that it is not necessary to remain in external solitude, or actionless, in order to practice a spiritual life, with the state of action or inaction is solely determined in the mind.

In order to attain the perfection of life, Krishna describes it is important to control all mental desires and tendencies to enjoy pleasures of the senses. The practice of Karma Yoga in everyday life makes an individual fit through action, meditation and devotion to sharpen his reasoning, develop intuitive power of acquiring knowledge and to transcend the mind itself.

History Of Raja Yoga

Raja Yoga also known as Classical Yoga or simply Yoga is one of the six orthodox (astika) schools of Hindu philosophy, being described Patanjali in his Yoga Sutras. It is also occasionally referred to as A??anga (eight-limbed) yoga because there are eight aspects to the path to which one must attend. Raja yoga is concerned primarily with the cultivation of the mind using meditation (dhyana) to further one’s acquaintance with reality and finally achieve liberation.

The term Raja Yoga is a retronym, introduced in the 15th century Hatha Yoga Pradipika to differentiate the school based on the Yoga Sutras from the new current of Hatha Yoga.

Concept of Raja Yoga

Raja-Yoga is principally concerned with the mind. The mind is traditionally perceived as the ‘king’ of the psycho-physical structure which does its bidding (whether or not one has realized this). Because of the relationship between the mind and the body, the body must be ‘tamed’ first through self-discipline and purified by various means (see Hatha Yoga). A good level of overall health and psychological integration must be achieved before the deeper aspects of yoga can be pursued. Humans have all sorts of addictions and temptations and these preclude the attainment of tranquil abiding (meditation). Through restraint (yama) such as celibacy, abstaining from drugs and alcohol and careful attention to one’s actions of body, speech and mind, the human being becomes well to practise meditation. This yoke that one puts upon oneself is the alternate meaning of the word yoga.

Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras start with the statement yogas citta-vtti-nirodha (1.2), “yoga limits the oscillations of the mind”. They proceed on to detailing the ways in which mind can create false ideations and advocate meditation on real objects, which process, it is said, will lead to a spontaneous state of quiet mind, the “Nirbija” or “seedless state”, in which there is no mental object of focus. Practices that serve to maintain for the individual the ability to check this state may be considered Raja Yoga practices. Thus Raja Yoga encompasses and differentiates itself from other forms of Yoga by encouraging the mind to avoid the sort of absorption in obsessional practice (including other traditional yogic practices) that can generate false mental objects. In this angle, Raja Yoga is “king of yogas”: all yogic practices are seen as potential tools for obtaining the seedless state, itself considered to be the first point in the quest to cleanse Karma and obtain Moksha or Nirvana. Traditionally, schools of yoga that label themselves “Raja” offer students a mix of yogic practices and (hopefully) this philosophical viewpoint.

Pilates Boston asked:

es Boston

Pilates Boston philosophy is simple. Provide the best training environment and the highest quality instructors to produce incredible results for individuals.

We have a modern approach to Pilates, one that blends the best of all the training schools with what works best for you.

Our focus is always on helping you achieve your goals whether it be to recover from an injury or get ready for a high school reunion. Even our group classes tailor each session to each individual to get optimal results.

At Pilates Boston, looking better is a byproduct of feeling better and being more flexible with a stable spine and better range of motion through all your joints. You’ll leave the studio feeling taller, centered and healthier.

Our private training rooms give you the ability to focus with zero distractions. We work with you for that day, whether it’s to continue on your long-range fitness goals or dekink your back from a cross-country flight. By providing the best environment and the best trainers, we push you to your personal best.

Pilates Boston staff has worked with a variety of issues including pregnancy, osteoporosis, hip replacement, frozen shoulder, car accidents, plantar fasciitis, breast cancer, knee injuries, ankle injuries, bone spurs, etc. We do not, however, cross the line. We know when to take over from the medical professionals and it is when they give us their blessing by providing you with a medical note to exercise again. If they have any restrictions we adhere to them. For instance, it is common to request that people with hip replacement not lift their thigh bone more than 90 degrees or to have their leg cross the mid-line of their body for some period of time until their doctor deems it O.K. We follow those guidelines and still give our clients a great workout and help them on the road to recovery.

Our philosophy is to stress working to the best ability for that day, to gently nudge our clients along with their recovery, and to help them find muscular and emotional balance as they take their lives off hold and go back into the swing of daily life. Chances are your body was protecting itself during the injury and recovery stages. Usually that means that you’ve developed some muscular imbalances (don’t worry, everyone has them) and we help you to get better balanced.

Pilates is based on movement, but after only a few sessions, most people begin to understand that Pilates can be so much more than movement alone. This Podcast is dedicated to providing insight and exploration into the body’s awakening as you progress beyond the movement. Pilates is one of the most important and fastest-growing mind-body exercise modalities, created by Joseph Pilates in the first half of the 20th century. Every issue brings you balanced, accurate coverage of all things Pilates, from exclusive workouts from the world’s best instructors to tips for performing and teaching them to the latest innovations in apparatus and products . Pilates studios that wouldn’t have dreamed of making a video a decade ago can make use of this technology to post video for minimal cost. YouTube is certainly not the only way to use online video to promote you business, but it is user-friendly and free.

Pilates will not only redefine your body, but your very definition of fitness. V Pilates offers a unique approach to a well known exercise. Pilates Method combines exercises from ballet with yoga and sports therapy to flatten the abdomen and help you build a sleek, toned appearance. It teaches body awareness, good posture, and easy, graceful movement. Pilates was formed by the part Greek, part German Joseph Pilates during the First World War with the proposal to improve the rehabilitation program for the many returning veterans. Joseph Pilates believed mental and physical health are essential to one another.

Pilates workouts will differ depending on the studio, instructor, level, equipment being used, focus, and whether or not the workout is a group class or private instruction. However, all pilates workouts should include some shared fundamentals to be effective. Pilates’ pure classical form. Pilates, the founder of the pilates exercise method, was born in Germany. As a child he was frail, living with asthma in addition to other childhood conditions.

Pilates Boston style core work helps you run faster and farther – really! Find out why – check out our web site http://www.pilates-boston.org. With over 10 million people participating in Pilates today in North America alone, the demand for qualified instructors is greater then the supply available. Pilates Boston offers rewarding and challenging classes tailored to suit each client’s goals and abilities.
Smith Bob asked:

There are many benefits of yoga training. Yoga training is one of the most popular forms of exercise and staying fit techniques practiced all over the world today.
Ashley asked:

We’ve all felt the guilt. We know how good yoga feels. We know we need to exercise more. We know we be happier if we got fit and de-stressed. But then it comes time to go to the yoga studio, and we don’t.

Why? Because there is no one to watch the kids? Because there is no time for an hour long class and commute? There is always an excuse.

Part of the problem is that, as much as we love yoga, yoga studios themselves are not always what they are cracked up to be. The fact is that studio classes are expensive and, unless you have free time to burn, out of reach of many people. Newcomers often say they feel lost in classes that are geared to the higher skill levels of more frequent visitors. Or they worry about other students judging their bodies or their skill. For as egalitarian as yoga should be, the yoga studio can be a daunting place.

Online yoga is increasingly being seen as an alternative and a cure for these studio shortcomings. And the yoga studios are figuring it out. Every day it seems another yoga studio starts a website seeking to extend its reach into cyberspace. Some sites offer written instruction. Most offer video programs of their yogis’ most popular classes, which can range from simple hand-drawn animations to high-definition video. Some of these videos are such high production value that they look like something out of Hollywood!

But videos are not where online yoga sets itself apart. After all, you have been able to buy a yoga video and watch it on your TV for at least a decade now. Where online yoga is making real strides is where it takes advantage of the power of its medium. The internet is a dynamic, fluid place where sites and experiences change on a daily basis in response to their users’ choices. Your online yoga class should be the same way.

Guided Yoga is one of the online yoga sites that has transcended video. It was developed by a team of yogis and programmers, and allows you to control the difficulty of your yoga class and the length of the class down to the minute. It uses an algorithm to search through hundreds of poses to put together yoga classes that are personalized to your preferences. The yoga classes it creates are always different–there are literally thousands of possible classes for each length and level of difficulty.

In an ideal world, we might all have the luxury of a studio yoga class every day. After all, there is no substitute for a knowledgeable yogi helping you into a new position. But for most of us, we have neither the time nor money for that level of personal attention on a daily basis, and online yoga makes for a great way to keep up your practice between studio visits. Although online yoga is still in its infancy, it already makes a great complement to a studio class.

Online yoga is the alternative that many people have been waiting for. The online yoga sites are now sophisticated enough that everyone from beginners to experts can find a good class. It’s time to get over the guilt and jumpstart your yoga practice today!

So what is Pilates, and why are so many people spending fortunes on Pilates classes?

Healing Motion

Pilates is a complete mind and body routine that improves the performance of the human body.

The Pilates principle, created by Joseph Pilates in the 1900s, involves conditioning the entire body by proper alignment, centring, concentration, control, precision, breathing and flowing movements.

Pilates focuses on the core postural muscles which help keep your body balanced. These critical muscles support your spine. When these muscles are weak or misaligned, you’ll know about it – as this is where chronic pain often starts.

Economy, Grace and Balance

The principle aim of Pilates is to create a fusion of your mind and body, so that your body will learn to move with economy, grace and balance.

Mastering the art of Pilates allows you to tap into your body’s ultimate powers – giving you access to your natural strength and vitality. Pilates will connect you to your strengths, counteract your weaknesses, and correct your imbalances.

Mastery of Pilates requires careful practice – you must be mindful of your body as you perform the Pilates movements.

How people benefit from Pilates

Joseph Pilates created his new system of movement while treating injured soldiers returning from the battlefields of World War One. The Pilates system was designed to be a versatile solution to a huge variety of conditions and ailments.

What would you change about your life?

Pilates can bring huge rewards:

· Pilates improves your mobility and flexibility

· Pilates makes you physically stronger, by developing your core muscles

· If you suffer with back pain or stiff joints, Pilates gradually lifts away the pain you feel

· If you walk or run, but find you’ve hit a wall and can’t improve, try Pilates. By building your core strength and stability, you will soon notice increased speed, endurance and resistance to injury

· If you suffer from a disability or are rehabilitating after injury, then the Pilates system will help you recover quickly and effectively – reducing the likelihood of recurrences or relapses

· If you, like me, enjoy sports and are looking for more power, speed or agility, you’ll love how Pilates can raise your game. Pilates is my secret weapon on the tennis court!

· Pilates also teaches you perfect posture, helping you to stand tall and proud

Learning Pilates

So, does Pilates sound like something you would like to try? Pilates is not a miracle cure. It’s a system for moving and for living. To really benefit from the art of Pilates, you must give it time. Try searching online for Pilates classes near you, or consider learning by DVD.

Courses and classes are great if you have the time and like working with other people, not everyone has the time or the money to learn in this way. For me there are so many other things that I like to do, so I have found a set of DVDs that take you from Beginner, through Intermediate to Advanced level enabling anyone to learn this great art. I am so impressed with Pilates that I have made these DVDs available to everyone at http://www.howtolearnpilates.com. My name is Derek and you can find out more about what I do at http://www.guides4you.com. I have also produced a FREE Brochure that you can receive through the post, just call 0845 003 8366, leave your details and we will send your brochure.
