10 Tips for better Yoga

10 Tips to get more benefit from your Yoga practice

The increasing popularity of Yoga, especially during and after the holiday season is attracting a lot of beginners to come to the class. The vast majority of popular Yoga schools offer very little advice to absolute beginners, mostly trying to emerge them into the practice, often overlooking essential points. This short guide is designed to give the beginners a few tips on how to get the most out of their practice, advance quickly and receive maximum enjoyment.

1. Do not eat 1 hr before class.
When your stomach is busy digesting food a lot of energy is consumed, making it harder to concentrate on your poses, decreasing your flexibility (because your stomach is full of food), and affecting your breathing pattern. Simply put, racticing on a full stomach is extra work the your body and it will decrease your performance.

2. Do not eat 1 hr after class.
Many people get very hungry after clas and proceed to the table immediately. This is not a good idea. During Yoga practice a lot of toxins that have been accumulated by your muscle tissue are released into the bloodstream (same thing happens after a good massage) making you feel a bit dizzy and sometimes even hungoverthis is your body trying to digest the released impurities, cleansing your system. This process usually takes about an hour, and adding food to your stomach will force your body to switch to food digestion, leaving the toxins to be absorbed back into the tissue. Eating right after class significantly decreases the purifying benefits of your practice.

3. Wear loose clothing.
Tight fitness gear, usually perfect for active workouts is not suitable for Yoga. Your muscles should be free, and your movements should be as unconstricted as possible. Try to stay natural. Naked Yoga works best :)

4. Pay attention to your mat
It is important to have a good Yoga mat, especially for beginners. Make sure your mat is not too thin, does not slip (especially when wet) and does not bunch up during practice. Having a skid-free and properly cushioned experience is recommended if you want to maximize your enjoyment. A selection of reviews of Yoga mats and accessories can be found here at the Yoga Mat Review

5. Focus on breathing.
While your insructor will definitely tell you this, it is important to note how essential this part is. Proper breathing pattern is a key to everything in Yoga, make sure you follow the rhythm of inhalations and exhalations set by your teacher, this rhythm will soon become natural.

6. Do not try to follow or imitate anybody.
Practice at your own pace. People around you may do crazy stuff, and there is absolutely no need to follow them. Yoga is not about attaining certain poses, but about balance and the practice itself.

7. “No pain – no gain” does NOT apply to Yoga.
There is no need to push yourself. A perfect pose is the one you can do comfortably. Yoga is not about physical achievement, you must progress at your own natural speed.

8. Dedicate your practice to someone.
To practice a little Karma Yoga, try to imagine that you are practicing for someone else’s benefit, picture this person and dedicate the fruits of your labor to them. This simple technique will calm your mind and put all your worries on stand by.

9. Do not skip the meditation.
Sometimes you are in a rush, and leave the class before meditation starts. You think that you’ve achieved all the benefits of the physical part and will meditate later. This is a common mistake that should be avoided. Meditation is the most important part of the practice, essentially everything is leading to it. During meditation you are able to utilize the calming effect of the asanas to go deep inside yourself – this is what yoga is about.

10. Do not worry about progress.
If you practice regularly, you will succeed. Yoga was designed to work on anyone who dedicates time to it. It does not matter who you are, what your physical abilities are like and where you stand in life – if you practice, you will feel the benefits.

I hope this makes it a little easier for beginners to get started and begin enjoying Yoga right away. Once you truly feel the effects, you will never want to go back, guaranteed!

Relax your mind and enliven your soul with yoga

Yoga is a time old practice which originated in India some five thousand years ago. Since its origin, yoga aims to radiate peace and tranquility within the mind, body and soul. Yoga is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘yuj’ which essentially means to join or unite. Thus, yoga refers to the self uniting of an individual with cosmic consciousness or the Universal Whole. Yoga Poses (Asanas), Meditation (Dhyana) and proper breathing practice (Pranayama) are the keys to yoga. When these three entities collaborate, a yoga practitioner is guided to a journey of deep spiritual insight. Practicing yoga paves the holistic path and help you to connect yourself to the Omnipotent. With passing time, yoga has become a non-denominational concept, that is, it has become an integral part of all religions. Spiritual oneness or unity with the Supreme is the ultimate preaching of all religions and yoga as a doctrine upholds this concept of oneness. There are different kinds of yoga like Hatha Yoga, Bikrama Yoga, Kundalini Yoga, Ashtanga Yoga and each kind of yoga are unique in their own ways but all leads to a similar spiritual goal.

Our minds have a tendency to wander and ponder. We tend to worry about the future or get upset about our past. This results in stress and anxiety, which not only disrupts the mental harmony but also have a profound negative effect on our physical health. At such a crux, yoga practices help us to attain a state of self actualization when the feelings of “I, me and mine” transcends into a selfless awareness of “Thy, Thee and Thine”. The simple practices of asana, pranayama and dhyana leads a yoga practitioner to achieve a state of optimal physical health and bless him a state of peace.

Different kinds of yoga help a person to rise from their immediate, present state of consciousness. The individual move forward gradually to experience a state of wholeness, well being and enlightenment. When coupled with soothing music, yoga practice helps a practitioner feel more refreshed and rejuvenated. The pleasing melody of a yoga music can delve deep into the senses of the individual and draw him to extra ordinary levels of perceptions. As a result, the devotee experiences a state of harmony. The yoga asanas encourage positive thoughts of mind and meditation helps in achieving the strength of will.

Breathing practice is another key part of yoga. Pranayama in yoga context, is called the science of breath control. Through the practice of Pranayama, the life force (Prana) is taken in and stored in the body. This in turn, brings great vitality and strength to the mind and body. Pranayama increases an individual’s overall immunity and resistance to various diseases. As the conscious control is achieved through synchronized breathing, the mind is illuminated and an eternal spiritual power is realized. Thus, it can be derived that through Pranayama, the vital energy of the body and the mind can be controlled. This eventually benefits a practitioner by providing increased energy to the body and develop the different faculties of the brain.

Meditation eliminates the veils of life and aids a person to reach a state of emotional bliss. Meditation helps to channelize the mind and soul and leads the meditator to a spiritual insight. Fluctuations of the mind are removed and a blissful stillness can be experienced. Through the meditation practice, an individual can attain a state of extreme peace and calmness and improve his concentration level. Music herein plays an important role. Meditation Music contains tranquil and soothing sound that incites peace and relaxation within the individual.

Today, practice of yoga has surpassed all cross country borders. With passing time, the universal appeal of the music has proved beneficial for yoga practice. Music during the yoga sessions will connect you to higher mystic spheres and enhance the meditative moods within you. Nowadays, Yoga DVDs and yoga CDs are available in all music stores. Newbie’s guide to Yoga accessories

Newbie’s guide to Yoga accessories

Yoga is increasingly popular in the western part of the world. Dozens of new “styles” have been crafted to accommodate the generally unfit, inactive, stressed-out and obese Americans and Europeans. The public’s increasing demand for Yoga-like exercises drives an expanding market of related products. There are hundreds of new companies, offering thousands of products designed to help you do Yoga.
For most people in the western hemisphere this millennia-old science is brand new, and this lack of experience makes it difficult to navigate the overwhelming market of yoga goods. This short tutorial will help choosing the basic set of suggested accessories that may help in your practice. If you are just getting started all you may need is a yoga mat, a carry bag, a set of props and maybe a special towel.

Yoga Mat
This is the most commonly purchased Yoga accessory and the most used. A yoga mat is a companion to your practice, providing support, stability and cushioning for your body and a place to meditate. When choosing a mat, consider its thickness, length and composition.
Make sure your mat provides enough grip, even when wet and consider the mat’s weight if you plant to carry it to the studio. Most expensive mats are usually the heaviest.

Yoga Mat Bag
Mat bags can be bulky and heavy tending to unroll at most inappropriate moments. Storing your mat in a bag is convenient and safe. A good yoga mat bag must fit your mat easily. Many bags are designed for thin, short mats and will not accommodate large, thick and sticky mats, commonly used by beginners.

Yoga towel
A piece of super-absorbent fabric, with tiny nibs that grip to a mat is called a yoga towel. This towel is specifically designed to provide additional traction during practice, absorb moisture (especially in hot yoga classes, such as Bikram), and provide a layer of hygienic protection when not using own mat. A yoga towel is a worthy investment if moisture during practice is an issue and an alternative to purchasing a mat.

Yoga props
Yoga props are designed to increase flexibility and provide additional safety in some poses. The most commonly used yoga props are bricks and straps. Straps can be used to gently pull your limbs during stretching exercises, adding to your natural flexibility, while brick are mostly used for support during bends and side stretches. These props are completely optional, and newcomers can completely avoid purchasing them in the initial stages of their journey. Consult your instructor for more information.

Yoga practice can be more enjoyable and comfortable with a good mat, a non-slip towel and some straps and block to help you with difficult stretches. Use your judgement and remember – none of this is required to succeed in Yoga, what matters is how you feel inside.

Successful Yoga practice does not require any props or accessories. Yoga is a science that utilizes your mind a lot more than your body, and there are no magical tools that will affect your inner self. The desire to improve your body, mind and spirit comes from within.

For comprehensive reviews of most popular Yoga products, we invite you to visit The Yoga Mat Review. This site features a selection of yoga mats, props, bags, accessories, music, dvds and books that have been reviewed and recommended by a team of real Yoga experts.
